Close view of gutter

Choosing the right leader head admittedly doesn’t quite carry the same weight as, say, choosing gutter covers, a hanger or any other part of your gutter system. Also known as conductor’s heads, scupper boxes or rain collectors, leader’s heads connect the main troughs of your gutters to the downspouts. While they fill a particularly important role, they also serve as decorative pieces that could seamlessly mesh the looks of your gutters with the rest of your home.

Let our professional contractors at Carolina Gutter Helmet® & More show you the value of this nifty little device and offer you some tips on how to find the right leader head for your system.

Composition

Leader’s heads are typically fabricated from sheet metal but there are a few newer types that are made entirely from plastic, specifically polyethylene (PET). The most common metals used are copper, aluminum and galvanized steel. Aluminum is lightweight, making it ideal for roofing systems that can’t handle heavy loads. Galvanized steel trades weight with strength. Copper is a good halfway mark between the two, but they are known to pricey.

Design Considerations

Most leader head designs involve maximizing its handling volume. They are often built into large boxes that taper off into a narrow tubing that fits snugly with the upper end of your downspout. Some manufacturers even use stylized finishes and trims to give the leader head a little bit of appeal. Ask your contractor about design options that could blend perfectly with your current style.
